Reading Room (2nd Level) Procedures

The Denver Public Library – Blair-Caldwell African American Research Library
2401 Welton Street, Denver, Colorado 80205
720-865-2401

The Reading Room is limited only to QUIET endeavors. These include reading, writing, studying, and/or research-based computer use. Precedence for space, microform machinery, and computers is given to serious academic scholars whose work encompasses pursuits that pertain to the African American experience in the Rocky Mountain West. Patrons requiring study rooms, additional computers, and/or other quiet places to read/write must take advantage of available accommodations on the First Level.

To safeguard unique and valuable material, visitors must observe the following rules:

  • keep all noise to a minimum while working in the Reading Room
  • do not bring bags (including handbags/purses) into the Reading Room (lockers are available for storing your personal belongings) – material not germane to your work needs to go inside a locker
  • turn off your mobile phones – conduct calls from outside the Reading Room
  • use only pencils for writing or note taking, except when completing designated library forms
  • use loose-leaf notebook paper only
  • do not remove records, materials, or books from the area – nothing circulates
  • return materials to the designated collection points after use
  • do not eat, drink, or smoke in the Reading Room
  • do not enter the ‘Staff Only’ areas

The Library is not responsible for any loss or damage to equipment caused by power surges, et cetera. If you are concerned about your electronic equipment - for example, laptops - we recommend that you use a battery and/or maintain backups at regular intervals.

Patrons requesting copies of secondary sources must use the photocopier on the First Floor. Library staff cannot make copies for patrons. Patrons requesting to use manuscripts must read, sign, and adhere to the stipulations on the “Application for Photograph/Manuscript Use” form.

Children must be accompanied by a supervising adult .
